Leonardo da Vinci created these diagrams of flowing water using ink and dip pens. He drew from direct observations of water with experiments that he set up. The water flows until it hits an obstruction, where it transforms into a complex flowing form.
In response to these drawings I've taken photos of water flowing in similar ways to see if it will resemble the shapes depicted in these diagrams.
I took the photos at a small river in Jesmond Dene. At different parts of the river the water flows at different speeds, creating a multitude of different fascinating shapes and patterns on the surface of the water.
I took the photos on my DSLR. Because the water was flowing at a fast speed I needed to use a very fast shutter speed to ensure that it was a sharp image.
